Using brew:
$ brew install jq
Then test:
$ echo '{"name": "john"}'
{"name": "john"}
$ echo '{"name": "john"}' | jq '.'
{
"name": "john"
}
$ echo '{"name": "john"}' | jq '.name'
"john"
